Family Conflict

Conflict is a normal part of the relationship between teenagers and their parents. For teenagers, it is an age of seeking independence and the desire to experiment with different lifestyles. It can be difficult for parents because they want to keep you safe. Realistically seeing the event from your parent’s perspectives and effectively communicating with them may be helpful.

How can I communicate with my parents more effectively?

Trust is one of the most important and first stages of building healthy relationships. Next time you disagree with your parents, you trust yourself to;

  1. Make a decision: Hold your urge to argue the matter. Stay calm.

  2. Talk and Explain: Ask your parents for their perspective on the matter.

  3. Relate non-judgementally: Try to understand what their concern is from a place of #love. When you understand their concerns, try to negotiate an agreement where you can get what you want while at the same time addressing their concerns.

Why do I get angry easily?

Anger is an emotion that everyone experiences. It is a response to a threat. However, some of us get angry more often than others. Young people can learn to react to anger in healthy and unhealthy ways. The feeling can arise due to physical discomforts, such as when you are feeling hungry, when you hurt yourself, or when you believe other people have done you wrong.

Is it bad to get angry?

No, anger is a normal emotion. And you are allowed to feel this emotion too. However, it is important to learn to control your emotions. Learning to control your anger will make you feel better about yourself, and you will get more enjoyment from life. Responding to anger in unhealthy ways is a well-known well-being issue.

What is loneliness?

Loneliness is an emotion that is often misunderstood. You can be with others and still feel lonely. You can also be alone and feel fulfilled. Usually, for young people, thinking about a loved one they miss so much and would rather be with can trigger feelings of sadness and loneliness. The emotion of loneliness happens when you disconnect with other people, in association with the strong belief that;

  1. No one understands you or what you might be experiencing.

  2. No one can help you.

  3. No one likes you and wants to be with you.

Is loneliness a sign that something is wrong with me?

Everyone feels lonely at times. Loneliness is not a problem unless you persistently feel lonely, and it starts to affect your daily abilities. A daily planned alone time for reflecting, relaxing, and rejuvenating can certainly improve the well-being of young people. However, when teenagers feel lonely most of the time, it may lead to mental well-being and physical health problems.

What should a teenager do if persistently feeling lonely?

  1. It is helpful to share how you feel with trusted family and friends.

  2. Practice daily self-care, which includes a planned rest time alone.

  3. Considered seeing a mental health professional. They can help you identify the root cause of your loneliness.
