What is materialism?

Happiness is something that we all seek, and we seek it in different ways. When people turn to buying or getting things to make them happy, that is known as materialism. Young people often get caught up in materialism. They believe that external things such as fashion, video games, cell phones, and other latest popular thing makes them feel happy or make other people like them. They feel pressured to fit in.

Other reasons why young people may be materialistic include having materialistic older ones, including parents. Their parents may have given them the message that success is determined by the money or possessions one has. We live in a materialistic culture.

So, what is wrong with being materialistic?

The problem with materialism is that it never brings happiness. Instead, it will lead you to want more, leaving you with the feeling of dissatisfaction. You may be happy to get what you want, but that happiness will be short-lived. When your happiness goes, you will want something else. You find yourself in an endless pursuit of happiness. This can make teenagers feel stressed and act desperate while engaging in unwanted, destructive, or anti-social behaviors.

If materialism does not bring happiness, what does?

  • Take time to appreciate what you have in life. #GREAT

  • Developing connections with others.

  • Learning ways to become a better version of yourself.

There are different ways to manage anger. Try this!

  1. First, try to stop everything you are doing by focusing on your breath.

  2. Body Scan: Take a moment to notice the sensation of the feelings in your body.

  3. Name the feeling: Try to understand what you are thinking that is making you feel angry. If you are angry that your friend betrayed and treated you unfairly, for example, “I feel angry that my friend lied to me.”

  4. Make sure the feeling of anger subsides. Then restart from a #GREAT place.

  5. Identify exactly what happened. Remember to separate the facts from opinions

Different Responses to Anger

Unhealthy Anger

Healthy Anger

You attacked your friend physically and verbally.

Deflect the anger by attacking other people, animals, or damaging things

Apply GREAT

Give compassion to yourself and your friend in finding balance.

Accept the emotions you experienced as a result of what happened.

If your friend is in the wrong, relate non-judgmentally by asserting yourself, and engage actively by communicating with your friend requesting for a behavioral change.

Reflect on the situation, what did you do to contribute, what have you learned, and what change will you make?

Now more than ever, many teenagers have problems with how they look. They have developed the habit of condemning the vessel that protects their being and coordinates all their doings. A home for their mind and emotional well-being. If you are not content with your physical appearance and cannot accept how you look, you may have a problem with body image.

What causes issues with body image?

The main cause for body image issues is the media, especially social media. Much of the media is designed to sell something or shape your thinking. Advertisers frequently use “beautiful people” to get you to buy products and services. Then your perfectionist human brain starts to compare yourself to what you see in the media.

Is having a problem with body image a serious problem?

Yes, believing in unhealthy thoughts that cause you to reject your body in a way that hurts you emotionally, physically, or mentally is a serious well-being issue. This can lead to #mybrainsaid:

  • Stress

  • Anxiety

  • Insecurities

  • Doubts

In addition to Depression, Loneliness, Low self-esteem, and other mental health issues.

What can I do if I have issues with my body image?

A good place to start is to realize that what is considered beautiful is different for every person. You can also do the following to start feeling #great:

  • Learn to be kind to yourself. It is important to have acceptance of yourself.

  • Spend time with people who make you feel good.

  • Avoid comparing yourself with others.

  • Seek professional help.
